ecological garden design
the place where you come home to nature every day
Being in nature makes us happy, and in your garden you experience this every day. An ecological garden is a place where people and nature meet. A natural extension of your home, and a safe haven where insects and other animals in your environment find food, shelter, and nesting places.
Your garden is a gentle reminder to slow down, spend time with the people you love, and experience the seasons. Here you can slow down, children go on adventures, and birds build their nests in spring. I help you create a garden that truly fits you and the natural environment that surrounds you.
where to start?
You want a garden that brings nature closer to home. Flowers and materials that match the atmosphere of your house, and pleasant spots to sit, play, and eat among the greenery. It’s important to carefully consider all the functions you would like in your garden.
Have you always dreamed of harvesting your own fruit? Or will your children spend hours exploring a natural play paradise? It can be done, even in a small garden or with a small budget. Let me show you all that is possible.
design process
Every design I make it unique, and tailored to your garden, wishes and the natural environment.
-
Appointment online or at your home. Together, we discuss your current garden, your wishes, ideas, budget, and planning.
-
2D scaled drawing with fixed elements, such as seating areas, pergolas, planting borders, trees, and shrubs. A 3D impression is optional. Includes a mood board.
-
2D scaled drawing with detailed measurements of the garden, including all elements and distances.
-
Plan for all materials in the garden, including quantities, dimensions, and suggestions for garden furniture.
-
Plan for all functional and ambient lighting in the garden. This ensures your garden remains a cozy and inviting outdoor space, even in the evenings and during the winter months.
-
Planting plan for the entire garden, bringing it literally to life. The plan includes 2D drawings of all borders, showing the specific species and placement of all trees, shrubs, plants, and bulbs. Includes a mood board.
how you recognise my gardens
ecological
An ecological garden considers all its inhabitants. Each garden is part of an ecosystem, where plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms contribute to healthy soil, clean air, and a pleasant microclimate. With abundant greenery and thoughtful material choices, we create together a climate-resilient, natural garden full of life.
water-wise
Water is the lifeline of a garden. A water-wise garden is climate-adaptive, resilient, and enhances biodiversity. By managing water smartly, the garden can withstand both drought and heavy rainfall. This includes capturing rainwater, incorporating abundant greenery and minimal hard surfaces, and selecting plants suited to the garden’s soil type.
edible
The plants in your garden can provide food not only for insects and other animals, but also for you. Nothing beats enjoying food from your own garden, and you don’t need a vegetable patch to do so. With fruit trees and shrubs, herbs, and perennial vegetables, every garden can offer a feast. It encourages mindful eating and teaches children what healthy snacking is.
flower-rich
A thoughtfully designed planting plan moves with the seasons, offering multiple flowering moments throughout the year. From spring bulbs to summer blooms, and from autumn flowers to winter silhouettes. This way, you can enjoy your garden in every season, while also providing added value for insects and other wildlife.
planting in the natural garden
Plants bring your garden to life. Choosing the right plants is a craft, and takes time and expertise. I carefully tailor your planting plan to the soil, the specific conditions of the garden, your wishes, and the value it provides for insects and other wildlife nearby, such as food, shelter, and nesting opportunities.
I always work with layered planting and ample ground cover. This results in a low-maintenance, resilient garden that can cope well with periods of drought as well as heavy rainfall. With multiple flowering periods, your garden changes every season.

next steps after design
Once the design process is complete, you will have a comprehensive set of designs and plans in hand, and you can begin bringing your dream garden to life. You can have the garden landscaped by a professional gardener or create it yourself (fully or partially).
During the intake we have thorougly discussed your garden budget, and made choices with regard to design, materials and planting accordingly. Generally, the greener the garden, the lower the costs. Read more here about the costs for creating a garden.

My name is Kim-Lan Jong Baw, eological garden designer and creative entrepreneur with a mission: bringing people, animals, and nature closer together. I design green outdoor spaces — both small and large — where nature and architecture meet. Flower-rich places that are alive with life throughout the year, inspired by the Scandinavian appreciation for simplicity, functionality, and the natural environment.
Together with my family, I live in Sweden since 2025, because this is where we feel at home. We love the forests and lakes, the sense of space, and the contrast between the seasons here. From Studio Jong Baw, I work both on site and remotely on projects in the Benelux and Scandinavia.
